Teaser

From its origins in a private home to filling San Francisco's city center with more than 30,000 game designers, GDC's journey was full of changes. This is a story of idealism, betrayal and success.
Today – well, not today, but in non-pandemic years – Game Developers Conference at San Francisco's Moscone Center is the lodestar for game designers worldwide (in 2020, Summer GDC is held from Tuesday 4th to Thursday 6th as a digital only event). In 2019, a staggering 29,000 game designers, artists and business people attended, with thousands more taking part in meetings, product presentations and festivities around the event. Prices go up to 2,500 dollars for an All Access pass, hotel costs are atrocious, and still, GDC has been ever growing (albeit, lately, slower than before).

But where did the (Computer) Game Developers Conference come from? It originated in a bi-monthly printed newsletter, the Journal of Computer Game Design, and was a gathering of like-minded subscribers to that journal and its founder, Chris Crawford. It was held in the latter's house in the hills above San José, then moved to hotels, bigger hotels, convention centers.

What had been founded as an idealistic venture and was incorporated as a "for profit" organization that was never meant to make any profit, soon turned into a money making machine. Even with giving out free food and ice cream and soft drinks to all attendees, profits kept growing. As was a conflict within the CGDC's board which finally pushed the founder out of his own creation.

For this documentary, games journalist Jörg Langer spoke to several designers old and young, travelled to San Francisco, San José and Medford, Oregon – and tried to capture what is special about the world's largest game designer conference even today. The documentary is totally free to watch. Only if you want to see the 4K version, our high quality 1080p version or the ten full-length interviews with Chris Crawford, Warren Spector, Steve Meretzky, Noah Falstein, Louis Castle, Julian Eggebrecht, Bob Bates, Simon Carless, Roland Austinat and Gordon Walton do we ask you to pay money – as did the crowdfunders who made the History of GDC possible in the first place.

It is really okay to just watch the free version above or on YT. But if you do want to pay for the documentary or the extra content, please use the buttons in the box above (PayPal): 5 or 10 Euro is your way of saying "thank you!" (and get you the HQ 1080p download from our servers), 35 Euro will give you access to the 10 full-length-interviews (see here) and 50 Euro will get you everything in 4K. For the donations/payments to work, we need you to sign up with us first. You might want to use this google translate link to register. Sorry for the inconvenience, and if there are any questions, please contact us.
